Georgetown - Penang Street Foods !

Hello there, mockingjays!

It's been a while after the last post i blogged, been a little busy. But today there are some special dishes that i am so excited to share!

Penang is a little island of Malaysia. It's known not only for the medical treatment and hospitals but also Street Foods. Georgetown is how we called it, is the heaven for the streets foods explorer And here i am walking around in Penang and trying their best street food !

1. SUNWAY FOOD COURT

Sunway Food Court is a place packed with A LOT OF street foods lining on the street! You can find almost all of the Penang heritage dishes here!

It's exactly in front of the big Sunway Hotel, and it's near the Penang Times Square and Komtar. You may live around here to get to sunway easier.

It's open on the evening around 5.00 PM to night.

As in Penang they haven't got MRT yet so you have to travel either by taxi or bus.

Sunway : Pork Rice (Sio Bak Peng) - 5 RM

First dish on Sunway is Sio Bak Peng or Pork Rice, it's delicious and full with pork meat, the rice is white and not hainam.

Other than this there is Curry Mee that is also awesome and you need to try it, i am sorry that i didn't catch the photo but once you're here make sure to order the Curry Mee also :)

Sunway : Chicken Grill - 6 RM

The chicken grill tastes real good as you can see in the photo, really want to get back there having this everytime i see the photo haha..

It's sold by a mid age man with the grilling stand in front of him, there are two men selling this, make sure to buy it with the man with more chicken that are grilling in his grilling stand.

Sunway : She Kuo Teng - 3 RM

We have She Kuo Teng in here in Jakarta but this one is different. Penang's She Kuo Teng is filled with nuts and fruits, all are soft nuts so you don't need to worry. You can either have this cold or hot. And all the ingredients inside are surely healthy for you, but you may have to order it with less sugar if you don't really like it sweet.

2. INDIA MARKET (PASAR INDIA)

To get to the India Market you have to walk a little further from the Komtar tower. Always crowded with people here.

It's just like a market that sells almost everything, you can find clothes, houseware, veggies, fruits, and of course breakfast!

As in the picture i am having my breakfast in the Kedai Kopi Baru. You can find Hokkian Mee, Fish Soup, Cak Wee, Ee Foo Mee, Wan Tan Mee (Bakmi), etc.

Actually almost all the foods in Penang are the same because everywhere you go, the street foods are coming in pack so they kind of selling everything. You will find the same foods everywhere just with different taste.

In here i like the Fish Soup! They have the best Fish Soup and Tom Yum!

Pasar India : Fish Soup - 5 RM

It's filled with Bihoon (Bihun) and Fried Fish with veggies and chili. The soup is so fresh and delicious, the fish is the best! Well it's beyond words to describe it i think it's better for you to proof it yourself haha.. I rate 5 stars for this!

Pasar India : Fish Tom Yum - 6 RM

The same Fish and Bihoon but with Tom Yum soup! Also 5 stars for this, i could say it because the tom yum is the best tom yum i have ever had i think! Shabu Sl*m and Par*gu has nothing to compare with the taste of Tom Yum here #ups

With curry leaf and some flowers makes it so original. A little sour, more spicy combined with tasty fried fish. Nyumm!

Pasar India : Porridge - 4.5 RM (Large)

I have this porridge not in the Kedai Baru, but a little walk from it. It's a pork porridge, a complete portion filled with fried pork skin, pork meat, blood, gut and tripe. I have only the meat and fried skin.

It's 4.5 RM for Large Portion and 4 RM for the small one.

Taste delicious, the porridge is soft and the meat and skin smells real good.

Pasar India : Coffee Mix (KOPI) - 3 RM

This is coffee mix so it's coffee and milk. but in here there are some calling you need to learn, so here goes :

KOPI (Coffee) means Coffee Mix
KOPI O means Coffee
PENG means Cold

TEH (Tea) means Tea with Milk
TEH O means Tea
PENG means Cold

So, when you want to have a real coffee make sure you say it right otherwise you will have a Coffee Mix with you haha..

3. JL. TRANG

It's just in front of my hotel. So, i lived at Old Penang Hotel Jl. trang. Been here twice and why i like to live here because it's in the centre of the city and not too expensive. You can reach Komtar Tower, Penang Times Square, Sunway, Traditional Market, Inline Stores and pharmacy, Gamma Supermarket by walking.

77 RM for a night with rest room inside of the room and 57 RM for the outside rest room. It's an old hotel but it's clean and neat so you don't need to worry.

Jl. Trang : Ee Foo Mie - 5 RM

Ee Foo Mee here will be so different with our I Fu Mie. If we have it fried then they have it like soup. When you mix it, don't be shock because you will find black noodle inside. Penang's ketchup is known for the black colour.

Jl. Trang : Fried Rice - 5 RM

It's a pork Fried Rice and tastes just like Medan Fried Rice if you have tried one. Tasty and also delicious.

Jl. Trang : TEH and IBII (@ 3 RM)

Other than White Coffee, Penang is known for the Tea too, and by tea i mean Tea with Milk or Teh Tarik just like Thailand's.

4. KEAT GARDEN CAFE

Keat Garden Cafe an Camerson Cafe (beside it) are exactly in front of The Mewah Court Apartment (near the well known hospital Lam Hwa Ee)

Opens at evening-night.

Camerson Cafe : Char Kwae Tyaow - 5 RM

Char Kwae Tyaow is also the heritage of Penang. You can find it anywhere you go and most of them taste the same which is delicious. Still with pork and fish and sometimes shrimp.

5. LAM HWA EE

It's exactly in front of the Lam Hwa Ee hospital and it opens from the morning. So, maybe when you are waiting your queu number at the hospital you can have your breakfast here.

Lam Hwa Ee : Martabak India - 3 RM

The Martabak it self filled with eggs but only eggs. So you will like having an egg cake with curry, tastes great also.

But 1 thing about the India Curry here, it's that it's more smelly that we usually have in Indonesia. Me my self don't really get used to the smell so that is why i haven't tried NASI KANDAR, which is also the heritage of India dish in here which you can find it anywhere too.

6. KFC - 7,3 RM

Well even i have to try the KFC here haha.. What's funny for me is that the KFC here is totally different with ours!! How?

1. They served us with Salad
2. The rice is HAINAM!
3. They call our kind of chili here THAI CHILI

what i learn from the fast food here is that i think Penang people don't really like consuming rice. Inside of KFC i can find people having KFC with mashed potato or fries or just the chicken.

And even Mc Donald don't sell their packet with rice.

Anyway because i am a lover of salad so i wish KFC here also serve me with salad haha.. The chicken have the same taste though ,just imagine you have it with the Hainam Rice :))

Anyway that's all my report from The Georgetown - Penang, Malaysia! Hope you enjoy it! And when you visit Penang remember to taste all the street foods rather than the mall's, because street foods here have the best heritage taste!

Well, let me share some points that you have to note when you are visiting Penang :

1. The seller here is not very kind like Indonesian, they rarely say thank you after your purchasing, so just relax and don't get mad because every country has their own culture :)

2. When you come to a restaurant (inside the stores like that) and not tables on the street, make sure you order some drinks! People here are sensitive, when you don't order a drink, be ready to be kicked out.

3. Other than that, people here are nice in showing you the route and bus information. When you cross the two way road and you see the across cars clicking their lamp, it means they are informing you that either there are police in front of you or there is an accident, so you have to be careful. What a nice team work!

4. When you need a taxi, i can say that the government taxi is more expensive than the personal taxi (that uses personal car)

5. Don't worry about the languange, you may use Indonesian (they understand Melayu), Hokkian, Mandarin and English.

6. When you come for a medical trip, make sure you come really early to the hospital like at 5.30 AM in the morning just to get the queu number otherwise you will have to be in luck to meet the doctor. I mean really, hospitals herr are pack with Indonesian and i mean pack is A LOT!

7. Don't try on anything if you don't intend to buy it :)

8. Becareful on crossing the road, wait for the crossing light on, cars here don't stop just for you to cross :)

What i adore most from Penang is that :

1. For people in Malaysia, To have an education here is free, and it's free from Primary School - College. What a TAXI driver told me is that :

People should not have their brain empty! Empty stomach plus Empty brain means chaos! Religion is often used for reason of making chaos by people but it's actually because of the unresponsible leader that used people with empty stomach and empty brain! So, people should never have an empty brain!

Penang is the best place upon Malaysia because in here we poor or rich have the same rights to work and have education.

And that's a taxi driver talking, he is so intelligent in speaking, and i know even a driver here is well educated.

2. Their full hearted Doctors! What makes Penang have one of the best medical treatment is because of their Doctors! Their doctors don't just find one diagnose and over but they search deeper to find what really happens to you and they have this heart that want to heal you.

Every life is important for these doctors! Thay don't play with your money, they don't give you meds or do test that you don't need, and when you are healed they never ask you to come back to control.

They don't find a fast solution, they work every little thing, you may ask every people that have their medical on Penang and you can find there are a lot of stories that proof our doctors in Indonesia are terribly wrong in diagnose and treatment.

I hope someday Indonesia will have a better medical and i hope that every man that wants to be a doctor will have this heart that are truly to help others.

Because our future is on you the doctor's hand.
